During the immigration application process, a petitioner may be requested to supply additional evidence of a claimed family relationship. To obtain this evidence, the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) center or U.S. embassy may suggest DNA testing, which has become recognized around the world as the most accurate and definitive method of verifying biological relationships.

Here is an overview of the DNA testing portion of the immigration process:

Step 1. It is recommended that you obtain the services of an attorney familiar with Immigration Law. Paternity Testing Labcannot give legal advice, or answer any questions concerning the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service regulations. The attorney will help you contact the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service to initiate the process and to obtain the (necessary) Immigration case number or numbers.

 

Step 2. To prove their relationship to each person who wishes to come to the United States (mother/child, father/child, siblings) to the satisfaction of the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service, a DNA test may be required.

Genelex's responsibilities are:

1. Securing payment for the testing and shipping.
2. Verifying the identity of tested individuals in the United States by obtaining copies of government identification, fingerprints, or photographs taken in our labs.
3. Completing paperwork with contact information for the tested individuals.
4. Obtaining biological (DNA) samples from the United States citizens. Most frequently this is accomplished by taking a buccal (cheek) swab.
5. Writing a letter to the Embassy detailing the names of the family members and contact information so the Embassy will be able to contact them to make an appointment with them for testing. WE NEED AN IMMIGRATION CASE NUMBER (see Step 1. above.) If you do not have an attorney, you will need to petition the embassy yourself for a case number.
6. In addition to the letter, Paternity Testing Labsends to the Embassy all the necessary swabs, or blood tubes for your family members, appropriate “Chain of Custody” paperwork, and return pre-paid FedEx International air-bill with complete return packaging. When the package is delivered to the Embassy, FedEx will email us with a verification of receipt.

 
At this point, we wait for the embassy's next move (It could take days or months). We have no control over the embassy's schedule, however, we have extensive tracking in place and work with you to expedite the process as much as possible.

It is possible that the Embassy will ask for a fee to be paid for taking the sample(s). We cannot tell when this will or will not happen; nor can we estimate the cost for this service. It is set arbitrarily at the embassies.

STEP 4. Once the Embassy sends us your family member(s) DNA samples, it will take our lab approximately 5-7 business days to complete the testing. All payment will be due before releasing results of the test. We will then send the client and the Embassy the results. The Embassy will also receive a copy of the entire “Chain of Custody” packet as required.
